“Lament” is a wide word encompassing an expansive variety of physical and vocal expression, including grief, complaint, rage, sorrow songs, styles of Celtic keening, Blues songs, ancient Greek exclamations, and communal and solo expressions of them all. Our “Deep Song” workshop celebrates the variety of emotional and vocal colours expressed in joy and lamentation and provides a way for the performer to deepen personal connections to themselves, their passions, and the ability to express them artfully. Our workshop will offer songs, sounds, and styles practiced around the globe.

Included are:

  • breathing exercises
  • vocal training and extended range
  • physical / vocal preparation for the expressions of lamentation
  • a range of vocal and physical forms, ornaments, and utterances of grief and joy,
    from laughter to lament
  • group and solo improvisations
  • interpretation of song and text
  • polyphonic singing
  • individual work in small group classes

    Students are accommodated in simple but comfortable shared rooms with two, three or four beds, shared bathrooms and two fully-equipped kitchens. Sheets and blankets are provided.

    1) we do not have single, private room
    2) we do not make or take reservations for participants lodging outside the Centre
    3) for residencies and longer stays it may be possible to rent appartments in the Château – these too also get booked early for the summer. More info HERE

    Workshop enrolment is confirmed only upon receipt of deposit.

    • Upon submission of the enrolment form below, a deposit of 120 euros per workshop is required, as well as payment in full for accommodation. Please pay your deposit within four days or enrolment will be automatically cancelled. Accommodation bookings will only be taken into account once payment has been received.
    • Unless otherwise specified, workshop fees do not include meals. Shared kitchens are available for the use of workshop participants.
    • For a refund in the event of cancellation, the deadline for withdrawing from a workshop is 30 days before the workshop is scheduled to begin. A €30 administrative fee will be charged for all cancellations. We regret that deposits are non-refundable within 30 days of the first day of a workshop.
    • In the event of low enrolment, the centre reserves the right to cancel a workshop and any deposit can be transferred to another workshop, or fully refunded.
    • The Centre Artistique International Roy Hart is an association under French law and all workshop participants must therefore be members. The annual membership dues are €30.
