Association & membership

The Association

The Centre Artistique International Roy Hart (CAIRH) is an association dedicated to the transmission, promotion and development of work on the human voice, initiated by Alfred Wolfsohn, Roy Hart and the Roy Hart Theatre. The Centre’s activities stem from over 100 years of research, study and practice. The association provides professional training courses and presents performances. It also preserves and makes its archives available to the general public.

Run by a volunteer Board of Directors, the association is based at the Château de Malérargues (30140, Thoiras) in the Cévennes, an imposing manor house with numerous outbuildings and a large magnanerie (a former silkworm farm). Since 1974, the estate has been rebuilt and transformed the members of the Roy Hart Theatre to welcome artists, students, teachers and curious souls from all over the world, to deepen and develop the unique work of the human voice without boundaries.

Our approach to the human voice is profoundly humanistic, applicable not only in the performing arts but also in everyday life, and allowing and inviting each person to sing the multiplicity of voices within them, and to listen to them as aspects of their personality

Membership

The association is made up of three groups of members:

1. Active Members
2. Associate Members
3. Ordinary Members

Active Members

The group of Active Members comprises:

  1. Individuals who taught at Malérargues, now known as the Centre Artistique International Roy Hart, before 1989 and who paid their contributions for the two years prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
  2. Individuals who have contributed significantly to the activities of the association, who are sponsored by two Active Members and then approved by a vote of the Active Members with an absolute majority of those present and represented.

Active Members have the right to vote at the AGM. They can vote or give their proxy, a maximum of 2 per person, to a voting member (Active Member or Associate Member) present, according to the procedures outlined in the Internal Regulations.

Active Members pay an annual membership fee.

Active Members can appoint Honorary Members (active or associated). Honorary Members are those who have rendered exemplary services to the association. They should be sponsored by two Active Members and approved by an absolute majority vote of those present and represented. Honorary Members are exempt from contributions.

Associate Members are individuals who have made a significant contribution to the activities of the association and have been approved by the Board of Directors.

Associate Members have the right to vote at the AGM. They can vote or give their proxy, a maximum of 2 per person, to a voting member (Active Member or Associate Member) present, according to the procedures outlined in the Internal Regulations.

In the event of a refusal by the Board of Directors, an appeal may be made to the college of Active Members, which shall render its decision by an absolute majority vote.

Ordinary Members

Ordinary Members are individuals with an interest in the Association who have paid an annual membership fee. They are informed of and have the right to attend the AGM without the right to vote.

The amounts and terms of contributions and memberships are set by the Board of Directors and ratified by the General Assembly.

  1. Resignation sent to the Board of Directors;
  2. Non-payment of membership fees as declared by the Board of Directors;
