Jocelyne Condat

Musician, actress, singer, and voice, theatre, and music teacher.
Lives in Grenoble, France
Roy Hart Voice Centre teacher since 2024

“I DIDN’T KNOW I COULD HAVE THIS VOICE”
These words from a student touched me deeply. This is at the heart of my teaching. How to create space to let out new voices emerge – both known and unknown- and free one’s expressiveness. Nurtured by my artistic and pedagogical practice, my work builds bridges between voice, movement, creativity, and yoga. I like to play with imagination as a way to reach a form of freedom and liberation. To sing is to find ourselves in a vibrant body, present and anchored. It’s not about trying to sing but about letting yourself sing.

Her artistic portrait in 12 steps

1) At 7, she doesn’t play with dolls but she dreams of becoming a trumpet player in a Mexican mariachi group!

2) At 8, she joins the Conservatory of Music in a classical trumpet class, because there are no Mexican music classes in Aix les Bains in Savoie!

3) At 9, fidgeting on her stool, she enters the classical dance school while continuing music

4) At 13, she must choose between music and dance, a difficult choice … it will be music. But dance will never truly leave her.

5)At 18, she enters the Conservatory of Music in Lyon where she graduates in music theory, trumpet and chamber music.

6) At 20 years old…still no Mexican music in her life, no matter, she founded her first brass band, and she began to sing in various choirs, first classical for great works, such as Verdi’s Requiem or Purcell’s King Arthur. Then came more eclectic choirs such as Résonances Contemporaines, Caliban, Brazilian music, or even a jazz choir at the Centre de la Voix in Lyon.

7)At 25, not seeing herself blowing her whole life into a trumpet, nourishing herself with various artistic, vocal, theatrical and physical influences, she decided to create her live performance company, the Compagnie Ces temps-ci.

They are 5 artists from different backgrounds and their desire is to mix all the arts, to go from specialists to versatile, driven above all by the desire to create their own artistic path. This company is now 30 years old. Musical theater shows, street shows, clown music duo, twice organizers of the Lyon Dance Biennale parade with 150 amateurs, adult and children’s workshops, in prisons, or sensitive neighborhoods, but also event creations, adult training: so many rich and founding experiences, which led her to play throughout France but also in Mayotte, Ireland, Reunion Island, Guyana, Spain.

This human and artistic adventure allowed her to become the artist and woman she is today

8)At 35, she began to meet other companies such as the Cie de cirque des Petits Détournements, the Cie de clown des Nouveaux Nez, the Percussions de Tréffort (with disabled people) the Infusion dance company and the Myhaut company and also the Association Vivre aux éclats (clown in the hospital).

9) Passionate about transmission, she continues to work with amateurs, during classes, workshops, musical theater, percussion, singing, clowns, and she leads corporate training sessions on public speaking and improvisation.

10) In 2013, she met the Roy Hart Voice Center, a strong, decisive encounter. From the beginning, she knew that she wanted to become a voice teacher and a few years later, she entered the APG training course, and she began teaching voice, which she is passionate about.

11) In 2021, she became a Yoga teacher, she integrated this ancestral body practice, a great ally of self-knowledge, into her voice workshops.

12) In 2024, she was asked to lead a body and voice workshop in the spirit of the Roy Hart Voice Center for the “Performing Arts” Bachelor’s degree at the University of Grenoble.

Today, in the manner of Charlotte Salomon who wrote “Life or Theatre”, she tries to reconcile “Art and Teaching”.

Jocelyne has trained with Edda Heeg, Saule Ryan, Carol Mendelsohn, Kevin Crawford, Walli Höfinger, and Pascale Ben.

She speaks French and English.
