The Advanced Pedagogic Group (APG) offers a group based training over a period of two to three years and consists of six sessions of eleven days at Malérargues. This programme provides a structure where students can go deeper into their own voice work, and one which focuses on some of the main elements of voice teaching as practised today by diverse Roy Hart teachers. It is a programme of intense studies for students who already have substantial experience of Roy Hart voice work. An certificate of completion can be provided at the end of this programme. The APG is currently led by Carol Mendelsohn, Edda Heeg, and Saule Ryan as the main teachers with different teachers invited to join some sessions. To be eligible to attend the programme, candidates should have completed at least 100 hours of group work in Roy Hart workshops and some individual lessons. To apply, candidates should send a detailed list of workshops and lesson hours including the teachers and dates, plus a letter of motivation to Carol Mendelsohn. Contact carolmendelsohn@hotmail.com

Students are accommodated in simple but comfortable shared rooms with two, three or four beds, shared bathrooms and two fully-equipped kitchens. Sheets and blankets are provided.

Workshop enrolment is confirmed only upon receipt of deposit.

Upon submission of the enrolment form below, a deposit of 120 euros per workshop is required, as well as payment in full for accommodation. Please pay your deposit within four days or enrolment will be automatically cancelled. Accommodation bookings will only be taken into account once payment has been received.
Unless otherwise specified, workshop fees do not include meals. Shared kitchens are available for the use of workshop participants.
For a refund in the event of cancellation, the deadline for withdrawing from a workshop is 30 days before the workshop is scheduled to begin. A €30 administrative fee will be charged for all cancellations. We regret that deposits are non-refundable within 30 days of the first day of a workshop.
In the event of low enrolment, the centre reserves the right to cancel a workshop and any deposit can be transferred to another workshop, or fully refunded.
The Centre Artistique International Roy Hart is an association under French law and all workshop participants must therefore be members. The annual membership dues are €30.

I believe that the voice work gives students the possibility to discover their authentic voices. In connecting the body and the voice, I feel that a self-awareness develops that gives life a fuller expression. An awareness of self gives a better awareness of others and fosters relationships of a profound nature.

Carol Mendelsohn was born in the United States; her parents were German Jews who found refuge in the U.S. Looking for her Jewish identity while living in Israel, she met the Roy Hart Theatre and soon moved to France to continue the work. Theatre is her passion along with the training of new Roy Hart Theatre Voice teachers. She has lived and worked at Malérargues for 33 years.
Carol Mendelsohn has trained with Kaya M. Anderson, Marita Günther, David Goldsworthy and Akhmatova Samuels.
She speaks English and French.

My very first experience of the Roy Hart voice work was in 1988 when I had my first individual lesson with Marita Günther. The joy of life and love entered into my voice. Now it has become my life and my passion to accompany people into the singing process. Singing means much more to me than the actual producing of a sound. It is a deep process of self-reflection, self-confidence and self-knowledge. For me my work is energetic work on all levels, combined with deep and passionate emotions to reveal the inner flow of life and love.

Edda Heeg was born in Germany in 1967. She began studying music, singing, and the violin at the Hanover Conservatory of Music and Theatre and continued her music studies at the Folkwang Conservatory in Essen, receiving her Diploma in Music Pedagogy and Eurythmics (Dalcroze) in 1994. She began to work with the Roy Hart Theatre in 1988 and started teaching in Malérargues 1996. In 1998 she opened The Roy Hart Voice Centre, Hanover/Germany, etage2. Beside her musical studies Edda focuses a lot on movement, Modern Dance, Body-Mind Centering and Contact Dance as additional accomplishment for the voice work. Edda has worked as a singer and performing artist for projects and in theatres, as well as in various performances at the Roy Hart Theatre. She is regular performer with the “Erstes Improvisierendes Streichorchester”, the first improvising string orchestra with experimental and land-art music concerts as violinist and singer.
Edda Heeg has trained with Jonathan Hart Makwaia, Rosemary Quinn, Robert Harvey and Marita Günther. She speaks English, French and German.

I love Alfred Wolfsohn’s definition of the voice as the 'muscle of the soul', because it recognizes how intimately linked our voices are to our emotions and our deepest being. In the dynamic exploration of different qualities and registers of our voice, bringing us to sounds and feelings not usually touched by more conventional singing techniques, we become aware that we are exploring more than just our voices. As one’s voice grows richer and fuller so does the person behind the voice. There is a flow and an openness that allows for more expressivity and a greater ability to connect with others. I like to bring out the actor in everyone by calling upon archetypal characters and situations that require a direct, physical engagement of body, voice and imagination. It is a playful approach to voice teaching that encourages the student to forget about technique and allows him or her to tap into the immense source of creativity and spontaneous communicability that we all possess.

Saule Ryan met Roy Hart and the Roy Hart Theatre in London in 1970 while still a student of photography. He was so 'bowled over', not only by the power and range of their voices but also by what he perceived as a deep commitment to both their own personal development and to that of their colleagues, that he soon joined the company and started to receive voice lessons.

He quickly found himself rehearsing and performing in some of the very experimental pieces that the Company put on in London up until its move to France in 1974-75, and he went on to perform in many Roy Hart Theatre productions throughout the '70s and '80s.

In the 1980s Saule studied movement with the dancer Dominique Dupuy and mime artists Claire Heggen and Yves Marc, and took part in two theatrical creations combining voice and movement, under the direction of Enrique Pardo. He began teaching in 1977, first in Europe and then in the USA where he continues to teach regularly on different university theatre courses. He is currently performing in an original piece called 'Generation'.

Saule Ryan trained with Roy Hart, Jennifer Allen, Derek Rossignol, Vivienne Young, Richard Armstrong and Margaret Pikes.
He speaks English and French.

For me, the philosophy of the Roy Hart voice work lies in listening to and observing the totality of the person who is expressing; taking the risk to be fully in the moment and following our intuitions. It is to give confidence to the student so s/he will dare to venture into places within him or herself, and into qualities of the voice perhaps not yet known, while taking pleasure in this exploration. It is to open a field of possibilities and to welcome the many personalities, voices and energies of which we are comprised. Finally, it is to appreciate beauty wherever it resides.

Body-oriented teacher, Laurent Stéphan holds a National Diploma for Teaching Theatre. He is very interested in understanding what expands presence in a person and in a performer. His unique approach and perspective is informed by his professional expertise as a theatre performer, a massage practitioner and singer, specializing in traditional polyphony of Georgia (4 CDs and over 200 concerts).

To enhance his goal of inviting each voice to arise and sound freely, he works with playfulness and spontaneity, but then combines this approach with a rigorous teaching of three-part harmonies, to develop musical and rythmical accuracy in his students.

Laurent Stéphan has trained with Pascale Ben, Marie Paule Marthe, Flavio Polizzy, Renata Roagna, Saule Ryan and Linda Wise.
He speaks French, English, Italian and Spanish.
